How to be a True Friend

1. Begin the journey

Understanding dementia and the many challenges your friend and the family is facing are deeply personal.

Step 2: Connect with your friend

Reach out to your friend! You will also want to speak to the family and let them know you want to either continue the friendship, or rekindle the friendship if you have not been in touch recently. Isolation and loneliness are two of the biggest concerns for increasing cognitive decline. You may get some resistance from the family due to the stigma, and their misperception on how beneficial this will be for everyone. Don't give up! It will be well work your effort.

3. Start small

Connecting with your friend in their home where the person feels safe, may be your first connection. Schedule a time with the family to visit, preferably in the morning when the person may be the most engaging. Bring a danish and coffee and and enjoy your time together.

4. Share a common interest!

Adapt activities you and your  friend have enjoyed it the past.

5. You are a True Friend!
